Biblical preaching's authenticity is significantly tarnished by contemporary communicators who are more concerned with personal relevance than with God's revelation.
Richard L. Mayhue
open_bible

At Valley View, "Scripture is our content; culture is our context." With this goal in mind, we seek to teach and preach God's word expositionally. Richard Mayhue explains expository preaching this way: Exposition presupposes an exegetical process (i.e., the study and interpretation of the text):
  1. To extract the God-intended meaning of Scripture, and
  2. An explanation of that meaning in a contemporary way.

In other words, at Valley View, God's Word still matters . . . TODAY!

Christian Secularization (07/11/10) Ryan Weberg

2 Kings 5 "Automaticality" - the state or condition of ascribing to all processes of life a natural, scientific, or reasonable cause, which brings about a direct, correlating, and "automatic" effect.  It's a condition to which everyone living in post-Enlightenment times is prone - both modernists and post-modernists.  And there's really only one cure . . .

Let Freedom Ring! (07/04/10) Ryan Weberg

Galatians 5 In establishing our new republic, terminology was extremely important - as evidenced by a discovery released over the weekend regarding an early draft of the Declaration of Independence.  But once "freedom" is defined, how is it that we are to cultivate and perpetuate a life that is truly free?

Growing in Grace (06/27/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Peter 3:18 So, it's summertime! A time for vacations, a time to get away, relax, reflect and be refreshed. But what are you doing to change? Like riding a bike uphill, Christians can little afford to coast through life - even (or maybe, especially) during summer.

How to Handle Leadership (06/06/10) Dr. Doug Finkbeiner

1 Timothy 5:17-25 Dads, like pastors, are just sheep charged with the responsibility of shepherding other sheep.  But how is it that we are to respond to those who are given that responsibility of leading us?  Dr. Finkbeiner examines the principles of correctly responding to leadership - good and bad.

For the Eyes of Men (05/30/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 4:12-16 In his Memorial Day Speech, delivered in 1884, Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes stated, "although desire cannot be imparted by argument, it can by contagion. Feeling begets feeling, and great feeling begets great feeling." Such is the necessity for Real Christians to fight well - that their spirit might be well noted, and easily followed.

Godly Service - A Missional Strategy (05/16/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 3:8-13 Common Culture is something that is shared at all levels within a society (think patriotism). High Culture, on the other hand, presumes that, within a culture, there are some who are more “cultured” than others, whose job it is to raise the living-standards and expectations of a society (think university). And the idea behind Pop Culture is that, within a culture, there are some who become “iconic” by simply appealing to the masses where they are (think tabloid).Significantly, all of these ideas of culture, to one degree or another, are present with regard to the office of Deacon, by which Real Christianity cultivates & celebrates a culture of service.

Godly Women - A Missional Necessity (05/09/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 2:9-15 The Home always impacts the Church! Her leaders are chosen by being tested in the home. And her future rests in the tending of the home. God has uniquely gifted mothers with the high calling of reproducing Real Christianity! But how does that happen? How can mothers be progenitors not just of life, but of the faith?

Godly Leadership - Missional Integrity (05/02/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 3:1-7 So The young man shifted at the platform as he worked through the multiple pages articulating his doctrinal convictions. But his anxiety reached new levels when the time came for questions from the floor. . . . He was doing well until one gentleman stood to his feet.

Here was the one man that the candidate feared most of asking any questions. He was a retired seminary professor, with more letters and titles after his name than in it – pastor, missionary, professor, theologian, and author all rolled into one. As the sagacious saint began to speak, he invited the young pastor to turn to 1 Timothy 3, and to read aloud the first seven verses. When he had finished, the old man said, “I have but one question for you, son. Do these verses accurately describe you?"

Godly Prayer - A Missional Priority (04/18/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 2:1-8 It's been said that the purpose of prayer is not to get man’s will done in heaven, but to get God’s will done on earth. I wonder if that’s the case for us today? How do we pray? When it comes right down to it, who’s will is it that we really want done? What is it that we most want to become reality? Prayer is all about bringing about new realities!

The Mystery of Real Christianity (04/11/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 3:14-16 What is it that makes a “Christian” a real Christian? Doctrine? Read again through the qualifications to be a pastor, given in 1 Tim 3:1-7. There you’ll find not one reference to doctrine, but an entire list pertaining to the way he conducts himself, and his public reputation. So how, then, are we supposed to tell who’s “in” and who’s “out”? There’s really only one way – real Christianity is best identified by two distinct motives.

Behold His Glory! (04/04/10) Ryan Weberg

John 1:14 And we beheld His glory!  John opens his gospel with these words.  He weaves into his narrative 7 miracles that are meant to act as portals to that glory.  And he concludes that many more could be written, but these should suffice to see Jesus for who He is - the Christ!  Nothing "shows" His glory more clearly than the resurrection.  But do we really grasp the implications of our life through His death?

Satan, Warfare and Shipwreck (03/21/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 1:18-20 There are times in life when you cannot afford to take things lightly. War is one of those times. And there are certain fields in which sobriety is of utmost necessity. Leadership is one of those fields. Like Douglas MacArthur preparing the cadets for both leadership and warfare at West Point, the apostle Paul prepares young Timothy for both leadership and warfare, as he reminds him that "Real Christianity" is a call to get serious!

How NOT to be Holy (03/07/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy 1:5-11 What is it that you desire most – to be holy, or to love God? Of course, we know what the answer should be . . . or do we? Maybe a better way of asking the question is this, Which occupies more of your thoughts and efforts – trying not to do wrong, or getting to know and understand your God better. Obviously, the two are not mutually exclusive, but in which do you find yourself spending most of your time – worrying about and searching out your sinfulness, or singing out and rejoicing in God’s goodness? Or maybe more tellingly, what bothers you more about other people – their behavior, or their condition? Can one be holy without loving God? Paul's answer is emphatic. And any attempt to reverse the order is only accompanied by disastrous results!

All You Need to Get the Job Done (02/21/10) Ryan Weberg

Real Christianity
(02/07/10) Ryan Weberg

1 Timothy (Overview) During the Super Bowl, Focus on the Family ran a commercial highlighting Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow – the first college football player to both rush and pass for 20 touchdowns in a single season, and the first sophomore ever to win the Heisman. Tim is the fifth child of Bob and Pam Tebow, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. While pregnant, Pam suffered a life-threatening infection. Because of the drugs used to rouse her from a coma, the baby experienced a severe placental abruption. Doctors expected a stillbirth and recommended an abortion to protect her life. Pam chose life, and today the NFL awaits the arrival of what some say is the greatest American athlete in a generation. But why did Pam choose life, especially when it endangered her own? Because the Tebows are Christians, and Christians think like that – at least real Christians. This morning we begin a series in the book of 1 Timothy, a book that highlights real Christianity – a book that highlights godliness as the necessary corollary of the gospel.

James tells us that real religion begins with the Word and ends with the world.  If you say you've got the Word in your heart, and nobody sees it in your life, the only one you're fooling is yourself!
